Cantrip Casting Guide

for Changeling: The Dreaming

Cantrip Casting System

  • Establish Die Pool: Attribute (per Art) + Realm (if more than one Realm is used, use the rating of the Realm with the lowest level. The exceptions to this are Scene and Time when used as secondary Realms)
  • Establish Base Difficulty: Target number = caster's or target's Banality (whichever is higher) +4
  • Establish Glamour Cost: Cantrips cost one Glamour to affect Banal targets, one Glamour for Wyrd cantrips, one Glamour for each additional Realm after the first, and one Glamour to cast without a Bunk. If the cantrip is Wyrd, then Glamour need not be spent to affect a Banal target. A changeling who Calls upon the Wyrd automatically affects Banal targets and creates Wyrd effects without further cost. All other Glamour costs are cumulative. Glamour spent above this cost reduces Difficulty on a point-for-point basis, but may never reduce the target number below 3.
  • Choose a Bunk: Describe the caster's bunk, and determine it's rating. Level 1 bunks can be performed in the same turn that the cantrip is cast, but do not reduce difficulty. Higher level bunks lower Difficulty on a point-for-point basis, but never lower the Target number below 3.
  • Determine Final Difficulty: Final Difficulty = Base Difficulty - excess Glamour spent and - Bunk level (if 2 or higher). The target number can never be lower than 3.
  • Establish Success (or Failure): Roll Die Pool against Final Difficulty target number and tally successes.

  • Countermagic

Kithain can counteract each other's cantrips by two methods, invoking their own Banality against the Glamour, or by counterweaving, reshaping the Glamour back into its inert state.

  • Invoking Banality requires the changeling countering the cantrip to gain a temporary point of Banality. The player rolls the character's permanent Banality trait versus a Difficulty equal to the permanent Glamour of the cantrip's caster. Successes on the Banality roll reduce the caster's Cantrip successes point-for-point. If all of the caster's successes are cancelled, the cantrip fails. Only the target of the cantrip may resist a cantrip in this way.

  • Counterweaving is an option for characters learned in the Greymayre Ability, and requires the expenditure of a temporary point of Glamour. The countering player rolls the character's Wits + Greymayre against a difficulty equal to the permanent Glamour trait of the cantrip's caster. The counterweaver must also possess the Realms required for the cantrip at their approriate levels. If the counterweaver scores as many or more successes as the cantrip caster achieves, the cantrip fails.

    Bunks

Players are encouraged to create their own Bunks, either upon the spur of the moment, or planning out a few in advance. The Storyteller is the arbiter of a Bunk's rating. Especially creative, appropriate or inspired Bunks should be rewarded by a higher rating, while Bunks that are recycled time and again or cribbed from another character may become less effective from repeated use.

Some sample Bunks appropriate to various Arts, intended as a springboard for Player innovation and as a suggested rating standard for Storytellers, are given here:
