From the countess' rose garden a short vesitbule leads to the Blue Room, a spacious, elegant parlor set aside as a receiving room by the Countess Rosamund for her favored guests. The room's color scheme
was selected to match the blazonry of Caer Ondomorna, displayed above the panelled doors leading into the private, residential area of the freehold. The device is simple, blazoned: azure, a tower argent (a white tower on a blue field). Brocade curtains of heavy silk frame tall windows looking onto the garden, toning well with the rich persian rugs which adorn the tile floor. The walls are papered in an exotic but subdued pattern, and hung with framed paintings, a few of them chimerical masterpieces conceived but never executed by Cezanne, Matisse and Van Gogh. Upholstered chairs and small sofas in Queen Anne style are flanked by chinoiserie endtables. Diffuse illumination is provided by a gaslight chandelier and wall-sconces. At one end of the room a modest wetbar, coffee service and tea-set occupy a long sideboard, beside trays offering a selection of finger-foods. Although formally appointed, the Blue Room seems intimate and relaxing, making it a good place for Rosamund to entertain visitors. Nonetheless, its fine furnishings serve as a gentle reminder to those here to hold not only to the Escheat, but to the standards of genteel deportment as well. |
